Holistic Relaxation in the Lake District from Hazel Bell
Have you ever been stung in the big toe by a wasp? I have. It was this incident that introduced me to the benefits of therapeutic touch to relieve the venomous symptoms, thus sparking off my interest in natural approaches to health.
For my degree, I was drawn towards BSc Occupational Therapy (OT), which in its widest sense is concerned with an individual's ability to achieve, adapt and grow. I was particularly interested with how the climate dictates the rhythms of daily life, and my OT dissertation critiqued the eastern notion that we are interconnected with nature.
Living on a farm in the Lake District, adapting to fleeting weather patterns is part of my normality; whether that be changing my clothing or my diet (saying that, it is a rarity to drink iced tea whilst wearing a sarong on a typical Lakeland day!). My approach to health strives to maintain harmony between the individual and the climate.
Whilst working as a Spa therapist, I was first introduced to an ancient system of health and wellness called Ayurveda, which considers how nature's properties are key to understanding balances and imbalances in the human body.
